Whether you are a full-time or part-time re-seller, or just re-selling on eBay for fun (like me), you need to set a goal for yourself.
How seriously you take that goal is up to you, but it’s important to have one.
Why Set a Goal?
It gives you a north star to navigate by. Something to head towards. Without it, you will simply drift from one sale to the next.
My eBay Re-Selling Goal
My goal is to earn enough from re-selling part-time to be able to pay my mortgage each month – roughly $1500 per month.
That’s a lofty goal, but it’s a medium-to-long term one, and it will keep me motivated to keep finding and listing items to sell.
The secondary goal I set myself is to list 500 items from when I started this adventure 5 weeks ago until the end of the year.
That works out to 5 items per day.
I made this goal for two reasons:
-
-
- I knew it would help me with my primary goal
- eBay rewards active sellers, and this is a great way to stay active on the platform
-
I’m on my way to meeting both goals. For the first month I made $160.17* – just over 10% of my goal. Not too shabby.
* Australian dollars
As for listing, I am a little behind, having listed 205 items in just over 5 weeks. But there is plenty of time to catch up.
What Goals Should You Set
This is completely up to you.
You could set a series of short goals, or (like me) set a large one and keep moving towards it. Just make sure it is within the realms of possibility and that it is something you really want.
I find a goal that represents something – like my mortgage one above – is a more motivational one than just a cold hard number.
Maybe yours is to pay off your credit card or student loan debt. Maybe it is to head overseas for a holiday.
Just make sure you do add a dollar value to the goal so you can track it.
Tracking Your Goal
I have created a simple spreadsheet in Google Docs (but you can use Excel if you have access to it) to track both my goals.
It’s nothing fancy and is totally manual.

But it is enough for me to keep track of the goal.
You can also keep track by keeping a list of all your sales and group them on a weekly basis.
